Should we expect others to grow as leaders?

No. Not everyone is happy as a leader. Being a leader brings a lot of responsibility and a lot of decision-making, it is not fair to expect someone to take this on just because we want to. Expecting someone to become a leader is the same as expecting someone to be a doctor or a policeman even if they don’t want to or like it; we can’t expect and pressure someone else to be a leader, it isn’t fair to them. Becoming a leader is a decision that should come from the person itself and not from someone else.

Not everyone can grow up to be a leader. It's not about undergoing certain classes or courses. To become a leader, you must have that something in you, a flame, fire of some sort, that would enable the drive within to grow up and become a leader.

Another opinion goes around the idea itself that it takes a long time to grow as a leader and therefore we cannot expect someone to grow as a leader in a year or two, for some, it may take decades, until the person is ready to become a leader.

To answer the question, we should but it doesn't mean they will.

I expect my students and children to grow as leaders because I know I won't be there all the time when problems come. They have to step in and face them bravely as leaders of their lives. I believe if we instill leadership characters from early beginnings, they will become great leaders in the future. I'm not talking becoming a president or the Pope, but just have the courage to lead their lives to a lot of possibilities and opportunities.

I support the idea that you cannot demand one to be a leader just because you or someone else has such expectations. It doesn't matter whether a leader has become such because of his charisma or he/she was forced by particular events, more or less it is a personal choice - not everyone shares the same ideals and dreams so it will be unfair to have the same expectations to everyone. However, if one acts as a role model, I believe that the person shall grow as a leader since the environment around us is continuously changing so shall be the leaders.

This is one crucial part of anyone’s leadership journey. Leaders necessarily need not focus on others’ growth as leaders but they should definitely focus on others’ professional and personal growth, which could in case of some or many mean leadership development. Also if this growth can positively lead to the development of others around us, we should definitely focus on others growing as leaders.
