Can we lead without charisma or money?

Sadly, I would say that it is absolutely possible to lead without charisma. I think it is called "bullying." How many of us have worked for a boss who is totally lacking in people skills or charisma? Plenty, I would say! A bully will play on the fact that people need that particular job and will then abuse that worker's needs by brow-beating them into doing as they are told. Unfortunately, I have worked for someone exactly like that, so, I speak from experience.

The monetary aspect of leadership is a more open playing-field. Some people are extremely money driven and if they are not sufficiently well paid, will opt to leave in search of better remuneration elsewhere. However, there are those whose chosen field is less about money and more about making a valuable contribution to society in their particular role. These are the people who will often put up with inadequate salaries because they love what they do and genuinely care about the people they are supporting.

As the world becomes more and more competitive, innovation is the key in so many different arenas. If there is no investment being made for the development of new products or the upgrading of existing lines, a competitor can easily overtake an institution's position in the market-place and this can lead to financial difficulties which may ultimately result in staff redundancies. So, in my view, a company needs to pay (at least) fair wages and invest in their product in order to move forward and provide job security.

Leading without money can be something very much more contextual and would invite different theories and approaches to explain the situation. Leading without charisma can however be interpreted in two objective ways based on the purpose and mission. Various researches show impressive correlations between the effect charisma and the satisfaction and performance of employees.

However, in such situations as work environments charisma may not necessarily be mandatory. But in the case of larger movements like the Indian Independence Movement for instance, there was a strong need for charismatic leadership to set a vision and drive a huge heterogeneous group of followers on one mission. In such cases, the only style of leadership that may work is charismatic leadership.

Yes, it is possible to lead people without money, but I think it is impossible to lead people without having charisma. We can also say that you should be a natural leader. If you are, you can make good money for your business, but if you do not have charisma and can not take people, they will certainly not follow you, and you can not be a good leader either.

Charisma would be described as something like a personal charm. It's just that feeling when someone comes into the room, and you'll notice him/her right away. You want to talk to the man, you want to be close to him. But can charisma be learned? In my view, you can support the charisma at least. It is certainly worthwhile in communication to really listen to your counterpart and maintain eye contact. And also remember what the person says. There is nothing more embarrassing than forgetting the name of the person with whom we communicated within five minutes.

Certainly do not underestimate body language - but there are many articles available on the internet and many books have been published. Speech of body tells us much more than we wish many times.

And last but not least - we must first believe in ourselves. Have enough self-confidence and realistically evaluate their qualities and know about their weaknesses. But if we do not believe ourselves, how can we want others to believe us?

I think we can lead without money or at least we can lead with small amount of money. Well, depends on what kind of things/people/organization we lead and how, but mostly the answer is yes. But without charisma, we can't lead anything. And that is not a bad news because, according to studies and researchers, charisma can be taught: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/naturally-selected/201205/can-charisma-be-taught

I think we can lead without money but not without charisma.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, charisma is “ a special power that some people have naturally that makes them able to influence other people and attract their attention and admiration”.

Being a leader is all about personality, attracting others, get them to admire and consequently influence them, which is the very definition of charisma so I don’t believe it is possible for a non-charismatic person to be a leader because charisma is the key to being a leader. Without charisma, the leader will have no followers, with no followers there is nothing to lead and so there is no leader.

I think it is interesting to note that money can help being a leader even if it isn’t essential because money can influence others and can attract people’s attention but the challenge is in keeping their attention and keeping them as followers and that is why charisma is necessary.

In conclusion, in my opinion, charisma is the key and money can help but it isn’t essential.

When talking about leaders, money is a confidence booster for sure, it gives perception of power and the more money you have, the more profit you can achieve, so rich leaders appear as powerful and good leaders. But the real truth comes when we put the money out of the equation. Without it, we can clearly see which leader is more intelligent, more flexible, has better ideas and organisational skills etc. Generally speaking, it is easier to lead with money than without it, but it is possible to lead either way. In my opinion charisma is the key for being a goood, respectful leader. It is what makes the difference between bad, good and great leaders. Natural born leaders are enriched with charisma from the start while others can adapt according the situation, and ''pick up'' some pieces of charisma along the way.
