Is building a wall in line with American values?

It depends which American values you're talking about. If you mean the ones the country often likes to proclaim, about how America is a country created by people seeking a new home after fleeing the tyranny of the places they were born, somewhere all men (sic) are equal and free, then the notion of a wall that keeps Mexicans out is problematic. If you pay attention to the values implicit in many actions that the American state has initiated or participated in, there's less of a paradox. Keeping Mexicans at bay is less surprising from a nation that has already largely wiped out the Native American population, where black people were kept as slaves and the effect of that continues to affect the lives of both oppressors and oppressed. Part of the intended purpose of the wall is to prevent drug traffic, but it's desire from American citizens that fuels such traffic - if there were no demand, there'd be no people risking their lives for the money they can make as suppliers. If you're asking a question about American values, it needs to be connected to American history, or the opinion stated is mere rhetoric.
