Are U.S. shelters for illegal immigrants empty after Trump's victory?

One year after Donald Trump was elected to office US shelters for illegal immigrants remain open. Illegal immigrant numbers have dropped to a five-year low, according to the Department of Defense. The last of the temporary facility shelters was closed by the Department of Defense in January 2017. In 2018, the DOD plans on reducing permanent shelter capacity. This plan is the direct result of the lowest number of illegal immigrant apprehensions at the Southwest border since 1971. According to the Customs and Border Protection Agency there were 310,531 illegal immigrant apprehensions in 2017, a twenty-four percent decline from 2016.

According to the Customs and Border Protection Agency, the period between Donald Trump’s inauguration into office and April 2017 illegal immigrant apprehension on the Southwest border fell 40 percent compared to the same four month period in 2016.
