Do corporations exaggerate climate change threats to make more money?

It is inevitable that industries involved in the manufacture of renewables equipment will become the new behemoths just as the major oil and gas companies were in the previous century. Whether they exaggerate the impending consequences of climate change or not, the fact remains that we are only moving towards sustainable energy pipelines that are not going to be as risky as drilling under the ocean bed for oil and gas and transporting them on tankers.

At the same time, given the instances of Volkswagen and other major automobile companies having taken regulators for a ride on their emission levels, care needs to be taken to ensure that all steps being taken towards addressing climate change are being undertaken with high-quality measurable metrics.

Another way that companies might be misleading their customers is by purporting to supply clean energy for an extra payment but utilizing the generated funds for meeting regulatory requirements of renewable energy components in the overall energy supply portfolio.
