There’s broad consensus in the scientific community that if the global climate increases by 2 degrees Celsius we are likely to see greatly increased and perhaps even catastrophic impacts. This is particularly concerning in light of recent research findings that the probability of containing global warming to under this threshold is less than five percent. My understanding of the actual research behind this 2 degree threshold though is that it is less about there being hard evidence that there is a biological and ecological “tipping point” and more about it being a compelling political goal for the global community. It’s an understandable and relatable goal which simplifies an incredibly complicated science down to a line that we should not cross. I think at the end of this day, the 2 degrees Celsius climate change threshold is a key part of galvanizing efforts to curb climate change because it is simple, compelling and easy to grasp.
