In which countries are private universities better than public?

The U.S has a predominant proportion of private universities among its top-ranking universities. The Ivy League is a group of 8 private Universities in the U.S. of which the most famous are Harvard, Yale and Princeton. The University of Buckingham in the U.K. is one of five private universities in the country and has developed a repute by scoring high on rankings. It is a small university though with less than 3000 students.

In terms of numbers, Japan has quite a lot of private universities at about 600 compared to the about 90 or so Public and another similar number of National Universities. However, there are not many among this huge number that feature in the top ranks except for a handful. The Philippines has a large number of high-ranking private universities many of them centuries-old and run by Church-related entities. India has a number of private Universities that are breaking into the Top 20 and also into the Top 10 list for the country.
