What is lacking in the US education system compared to other countries?

According to an international ranking of OECD countries, the US education system is 'mediocre' in comparison with the rest of the world. As well as this, being a European, Americans over here are always given the stereotype of being 'those Americans who are silly and don't know anything'. Perhaps it's only a simple stereotype, but why is it the case?

Back to looking at the international ranking of the US education system, it has fallen far behind countries such as Finland, and Korea. The US scored below average in mathematics and ranks 17th among the 34 OECD countries. Therefore their teaching of Mathematics is lacking compared to other countries. As well as this, students in the US are constantly complaining of a homework overload, with the only motivation to do it being the concern for grades. In other high-performing countries, homework is given out very lightly. Looking again to Finland, which is a country which has been given more attention in regards to their good education system. Here they want to make sure all students, regardless of their economic situation can make it to education. In the US however, it depends on taxes to fund schools, and so the wealthy areas draw in more money than the poorer.
