Is being a leader a recipe for happiness?

There is no guarantee answer whether a leader will be happy or not. Happiness is a difficult thing to measure and the indication of time puts happiness a very difficult sphere.

If a leader follows their heart and does what they truely believe in, I also believe that they can ultimately reach happiness.

If a leader goes by simply doing what he think he has to and his heart in not in the right place, then in my opinion, the leader will not be a "happy" leader and in the long run will fall down to the path of misery.

All in all, if you make the recipe yours, you can be a happy leader.
