Examples how civil society leadership has improved in Bulgaria?

On 14th June 2013 in Bulgaria have started massive protests of the civil society against the corruption and some antidemocratic practices of the Bulgarian Government. There were more than 10 thousand people only during the first day of the protests which conntinued for weeks. The main reason for this was the appointment of Delyan Peevski, who is a powerful representative of the oligarchy in the country, on a leading position in the Bulgarian National Security Agency. These facts are given here to show the improvement in civil society in Bulgaria in the last few years. Since then more and more young and well-educated people are not afraid to confront with the authorities and to require responsibility to be taken by the politicians for their decisions. There were many more diferent civil initiatives but a valuable example for me happened in the beginning of 2108 when a part of the territory of Pirin National Park was planned to be given for a concession. Its aim was the construction of a second lift. The protests provoked media interest and have led to the delay of the procedures and court hearings. All these activities show me that our society is interested and willing to protect nor only its democracy rights but is also changing its view towards the environmental issues. My observations also show that the number of people participating in public debates related to important pieces of legislation have grown in the last years. This result in a stronger civil society from the one hand and a better communication between the public authorities and the people from the other.
