The threat of a win for Marin Le Pen and the Front National may have been another nail in the coffin for the European Union after Brexit. To see the Front National defeated so soundly, and by a winning candidate in Macron who is very much an avowed globalist, will most likely give the EU a shot in the arm. A win for the Front National could well have empowered other far right or anti-EU parties throughout the union, just as Le Pen was buoyed up by the unexpected victory of Donald Trump and he by the unexpected Brexit vote.

The next test will be how Macron relates to Theresa may in the UK and how much he will join forces with other EU leaders to defend the interests of the EU first over Britain in the upcoming Bexit negotiations.
