Does social media create a global community?

Social media has massively connected the world together by creating one platform for diverse communities to come together and so I would 100% say it is able to bring together a global community. Take twitter for example. Twitter is a platform for strangers to get involved in debate, no matter where in the world they may be or what viewpoint they adhere to. Using just a hashtag, people from across the world can come together in discussion in a way which could never have been possible without such a platform on the internet. Facebook groups allow people to become friends, and get involved with daily discussions, and it has no significance that they are in contact on different corners of the earth. The key factor of social media, is it diminishes the distance between people - whether it is just two people or a whole town, and creates a place for interaction which otherwise would be impossible.
