Does social media create a global community?

Social media has massively connected the world together by creating one platform for diverse communities to come together and so I would 100% say it is able to bring together a global community. Take twitter for example. Twitter is a platform for strangers to get involved in debate, no matter where in the world they may be or what viewpoint they adhere to. Using just a hashtag, people from across the world can come together in discussion in a way which could never have been possible without such a platform on the internet. Facebook groups allow people to become friends, and get involved with daily discussions, and it has no significance that they are in contact on different corners of the earth. The key factor of social media, is it diminishes the distance between people - whether it is just two people or a whole town, and creates a place for interaction which otherwise would be impossible.

Social media has connected people in ways unimaginable a generation ago, and creating a global community has been one of its defining aspects. Everything from political debate to petitions protecting endangered species to appreciation of trailers from the latest Hollywood blockbuster can fire the collective imagination of the world-wide web. Trending topics can be seized upon, and video footage can swiftly go 'viral', unimpeded by national boundaries.

While this arena has provided an invaluable resource for marketing, with popstars becoming overnight sensations thanks to YouTube hits - and shares - but the global community also benefits from more culturally significant mass communication. Scientific breakthroughs can be disseminated. International events, such as natural disasters or war, can generate waves of empathy, provoking millions of characters of reaction.

Of course, as with many other examples of human interaction, social media can also be abused - and when this occurs on a global scale it requires free societies to carefully monitor the situation. Jihadi groups operating in the Middle East may routinely decry the trappings of 'decadent' western civilization, yet they enthusiastically embrace the technologies that provide a platform for their vile propoganda. All that social media is doing is reflecting life in its myriad forms, and the latter example is still regarded as an aberration compared to the immense benefits offered by trans-global communication.

Yes, definitely. I "know" many people on social media from all over the globe whom I've never met in real life. We talk to each other about many things, and often form support for each other in different ways, though we may not even recognise each other if we passed on the street. I have also met many wonderful real life friends who I first got to know on the internet. Social media can be a lifeline for people in isolated situations, who have not got the opportunity for much of a social circle. Perhaps if they are elderly, disabled or just don't know many likeminded people where they live. It is also useful for, for example, LGBT people who can meet other LGBT people online in safety.

It certainley does. Without social media, I would never have went to New York to meet an artist which I became good online friends with. I would never have found two internships abroad in the Netherlands if I hadn't used the internet - which were two of the most exciting periods of my life. Yes social media has played a big part in my life, as it has for others. If we take a step back to a number of years ago, and think just how much social media has influenced out lives until now, it's crazy. Some people have even met their soulmates from other sides of the world to where they are, it's uses are absolutely limitless.

We are much more connected now thanks to social media. Knowing there is a global community online there when you feel alone is a comforting thing. You can speak to someone miles away and create new online friends from different cultures, and learn about how they live there. Social media is good if we use it in the right way to get the best from it, rather than abuse it.

Social media is the global community. It enables people who are subscribed to the same school of thought to have a medium where they can connect, share, and expound on their ideas. This enables people to connect on a global scale independent of one's physical address. Secondly, the ability of a person to create an online presence on any social media platform that suits their personality and preferences cannot be understated. This means that anyone independent of their character, which might not suit a particular social media platform, has options that can make their voice heard. This enables them to rally others to their cause essentially creating a global community of some sort.
Humans are social beings and social media is a facilitator of the same. People can share a lot of information and have meaningful conversations on social media, this will have an effect of bringing such people together. Recently, we have seen social media being used as a tool to bring people together to fight for a common cause. Such ideologies have seen the rise of activism on social networks from people of different cultures. Just the other day, the torture and jailing of a popular musician and activist from Uganda – Bobi Wine, saw a backlash on social platforms with millions of individuals, celebrities and political figures asking for his release. A single hashtag united people from all nations and in the end, the government of Uganda had no choice but to release the activist.
