Social media is the global community. It enables people who are subscribed to the same school of thought to have a medium where they can connect, share, and expound on their ideas. This enables people to connect on a global scale independent of one's physical address. Secondly, the ability of a person to create an online presence on any social media platform that suits their personality and preferences cannot be understated. This means that anyone independent of their character, which might not suit a particular social media platform, has options that can make their voice heard. This enables them to rally others to their cause essentially creating a global community of some sort.
Humans are social beings and social media is a facilitator of the same. People can share a lot of information and have meaningful conversations on social media, this will have an effect of bringing such people together. Recently, we have seen social media being used as a tool to bring people together to fight for a common cause. Such ideologies have seen the rise of activism on social networks from people of different cultures. Just the other day, the torture and jailing of a popular musician and activist from Uganda – Bobi Wine, saw a backlash on social platforms with millions of individuals, celebrities and political figures asking for his release. A single hashtag united people from all nations and in the end, the government of Uganda had no choice but to release the activist.
