Yes, definitely. I "know" many people on social media from all over the globe whom I've never met in real life. We talk to each other about many things, and often form support for each other in different ways, though we may not even recognise each other if we passed on the street. I have also met many wonderful real life friends who I first got to know on the internet. Social media can be a lifeline for people in isolated situations, who have not got the opportunity for much of a social circle. Perhaps if they are elderly, disabled or just don't know many likeminded people where they live. It is also useful for, for example, LGBT people who can meet other LGBT people online in safety.
