Can a leader also be a follower?

Yes, without a doubt. Every leader can be a follower of another leader and that would actually make that leader even better if he follows someone who he think he can learn and educate himself from.

This type of a leader, who is also a follower, is a very good form of leadership. If you do not have any mentors, coaches or anyone else to look up to you have a good chance of "slipping off the vagon" and actually turning into a bad leader in the long run even if you are doing quite well now.

In theory, a single person can be a leader for multiple communities or organizations as well as be also a followers for many other leaders.

A common misbelief is that a follower is merely a ‘sheep’, however, a follower can make or break a leader. Good followers will support their leader, but, not blindly, they have the courage to tell their leader when things are going sideways. For leaders to excel in leadership they have to learn how to be good followers. A leader who follows learns how to read people and understand their needs and what motivates them. This means the leader is aware of how to bring colleagues, co-workers, customers and board members together, which is very crucial for any organization. As a follower, a leader learns how to embrace others who have different beliefs, this enables the leader not to look ignorant towards what those around him/her are feeling. This will also eliminate unnecessary disagreements and foster good working conditions. A leader who can follow others understands the importance of collaboration and teamwork. They know how to bring the best out of every individual in order to produce a collective team effort. For anyone to be a leader they must be prepared to follow, regardless of the level of leadership they are in.

Yes, because every leader needs a mentor to be followed. The mentor could be the higher leader in the organization, someone famous related to the organization's field, a lifestyle guru or a religious leader. Someone with more knowledge and experience whom the leader can learn something from. This will make a leader to grow and learn continuously.

I also support the opinions shared before. For me, as it is in the majority of everyday situations, the best way to define a good leader is by the Yin and Yang picture. In every good leader there is a part that shall be open to new ideas and ready to follow which makes the right balance in a person. Also, a successul mentor will not hesitate to accept ideas from the others if they are innovative and aim-oriented which makes the difference between motivator and a mediocre boss.

"Leadership" I think people often here this word and think on one person leading a group. This is a fitting description, however there is many leadership qualities that follwers can and should have.

Example: I was once a crew leader on a 12 day hiking trip. I was in charge of a group of 7. Of the group, I had two guys I knew I could always count on to get things done. I could deligate tasks to them and assign others to help them. There is many theories and words that can describe what happens in this scenario. But the question is Where they leaders?

Conclusion: It can become an argument of semantics. What is a "leader"? What is a "follower"? I am deciding to answer like this. Leadership = Personal responsibilty. When you take responsibility for yourself, you can then lead others. So as long as followers can take on responisbilty and lead others, they are leaders. Even if they are following someone else.

Please leave any feed back you have, this question begs many opinons.

Of course he/she can. Leader can follow the ones, who were before him/her in that place, respects them and see them as their role models. Leader can also be a follower of other organizations who serve him as an example that he strives to accomplish. That is good for possible cooperation between different organizations which always lead to better results regarding society improvements. Ultimately, he/she may be a follower of his followers, which is also desirable because he needs to listen to their advice, work closely with them, receive their help, motivate them to work and direct them.

Yes. A leader for some can be a follower for others. A leader can have a group of followers who admire him/her and are influenced by him/her but that leader can also admire and be influenced by another person. Being a leader doesn’t make a person immune to another person’s charisma and influence so a leader can be a follower as well. A good example is the hierarchy in organizations, there are plenty of leaders that are also followers and even the owner of the company will have someone who they admire and are influenced by, making them act as their follower even if in the company itself they are at the top. Even the biggest and most charismatic leaders in the world have someone that can influence them as a leader.
