Why should we want to be servant leaders even if we are not compensated by it?

We want to be servant leaders even if we are not compensated by it because of public interest, common good, and advancement of society that we live in. Because of our children, their children and children's children. We want to leave something behind that can't be deleted or measured in money/material gains but in the sense of better life for all people. That kind of reward, remembrance of leader and his/her works for decades to come, is more honorable and precious than any money. Why? Answer is simple: many generations after can learn from that work and continue to do it.

Lead by an example. Imagine a world where not everything is being measured by money or self-interest. That is only possible if human's perception on world in general is guided by spiritual and inner values instead of material things. We should all aspire to that. At the end of the day, it is not our bank account that defines us, but the way we treat others, and what we do for others knowing they can do nothing for us. Human behaviour is largely determined by behaviour of others, it is easier to get along with crowd than to stand out from it. But the thing is, we do not need to stand out, one good deed a day is enough, you never know who might see you doing that unselfish thing and then decides to act in a similar way.

We want it because it will bring you more than work satisfaction. A servant leadership fruits a closer community. Each member cares for one another and work together to achieve. These are some of the servant leaderships’ compensations and reasons to get energized to work every morning. If you feel not compensated by it, it means you’re doing it the wrong way. Maybe you serve too much and forget to lead, which makes work becoming tiresome. Leadership is still the key here. You have to make it clear to everyone in the organization about the goals you want them to achieve, how they can achieve the goals, and you will supports them in every step of the way. But from time to time, you still needs to give them sense of your leadership.

Servant leadership is one of the best and most selfless approaches to leadership given the kind of commitment and rigour it requires. The bigger compensation of being a servant leader is the development, growth and learning that comes with being one such leader. The idea of building relationships and investing others diametrically multiplies when it comes to servant leadership and that is some compensation which many other roles fail to provide. Especially since servant leaders go beyond their self interest to focus on all the different opportunities available for the entire team of followers grow and develop. Most often it is a case that servant leaders use persuasion over power or authority to get things done.

If we talk about financial compensation, let's say it flat. Finance is always a very strong motivation and few people want to work for free. And being a leader is a very busy job that certainly deserves compensation.

However, there is certainly other motivation than just the financial side of the thing. If we disregard finance, the motivation can be, for example, a feeling of self-realization, the acquisition of new experience, or the ability to convey to others a certain "message", know-how or knowledge. Primarily, these reasons should be sour motivation, because without a certain fervor and interest in the thing we cannot certainly be good leaders. A good leader will not be certainly a man who sees only profits behind the leadership. Finance should be motivation, but not the main thing, it should be a reward for our time and effort that we devote to our work.
